In its 2012 version, both minivans offer more than 40 standard safety features or additional. Among the standard safety features have airbags in the front seats, three bags on the sides, one for the driver's knees and one traction control at any speed. Both models come with the SafetyTec package which includes a sensor for parking, blind spots system monitoring, and motion detector in the rear of the car.

The Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country 2012 received scores of 4.51 in its strength-weight ratio, one of the highest among the minivans that were tested and higher than the requirement of 4.0 of the IIHS. The government's minimum requirement is 1.5.

The IIHS tests for the safest minivans of 2012 were based on frontal crashes simulations at speeds of 40 miles per hour and for the sides 31 miles per hour into a barrier representing the front of a pickup truck or an SUV.
